Module 3 of 7 · Course contents

A portable ladder as a workstation at height is the last resort: only when other, safer equipment is not justified by the low risk and the site cannot be changed (4.1.2).

Setting up

  • On a stable, strong and immovable base, with the rungs horizontal.
  • With the feet secured or an anti-slip device.
  • For access to another level, it must extend at least 1 metre above it.
  • Single ladders at about 75 degrees to the horizontal.

Use

  • Climb, descend and work facing the ladder, with a secure handhold and support at all times.
  • Above 3.5 metres, if the task needs movements or efforts that endanger stability: fall arrest harness or another alternative measure.
  • Never two people at once; no loads that compromise your grip.
  • Makeshift ladders and painted wooden ladders (paint hides defects) are banned; ladders are inspected periodically.
In practiceStanding a ladder on a pallet to reach higher is a «makeshift ladder» on an unstable base: it is prohibited.
