Module 8 of 8 · Course contents

Sixth block of the common part: first aid and emergency measures (annex XII, section 2.II.A.6). This covers the organisation the rules require; the first aid techniques themselves are explained in the first aid course.

What the company must organise (Law 31/1995, article 20)

Analyse possible emergency situations and adopt measures for first aid, fire-fighting and evacuation, appointing the staff in charge, who must have training, be sufficient in number and have suitable material; and organise relations with external services (first aid, emergency medical care, rescue and fire-fighting).

On site (Royal Decree 1627/1997, annex IV, part A, point 14)

  • The employer ensures that first aid can be given at all times by staff with sufficient training, and that the injured person can be evacuated to receive medical care.
  • When the size of the site or the activity so requires, there will be first aid rooms, with the essential material, easy access for stretchers and signage.
  • Where conditions so require, first aid material that is signposted and easy to reach.
  • Clearly visible signage shows the address and telephone number of the local emergency service.

Evacuation and fire (part A, points 4 and 5)

Emergency routes and exits kept clear, leading as directly as possible to a safe area, unobstructed and signposted; in case of danger, the whole site must be able to be evacuated quickly. Sufficient, easily reachable extinguishers, signposted, checked and maintained regularly and with periodic tests and drills.

What you are also owed on site (part A, points 15 and 19)

  • Changing rooms with seats and somewhere to dry clothes if needed; showers with hot and cold water when the activity or hygiene so require, or washbasins; toilets near the workstations; separate for men and women or for separate use.
  • Drinking water in sufficient quantity, near the workstations, and facilities for eating in safe and healthy conditions.
In practiceA colleague cuts himself with the angle grinder. Alert the person appointed for first aid, who has the signposted first aid kit; if it is serious, call the emergency service whose number is on the sign in the site hut and clear the access route for the ambulance. Afterwards, the company investigates and corrects what went wrong.
